From an early age Steve Godwin (Strawberry to his friends) knew he had a fascination with music.
Steve was particularly influenced by the sounds of Motown and that fascination grew towards a more 'electronic' sound.
Having started his working life as a trolley person in Safeway, and not feeling fulfilled, Steve decided to follow his heart and began pursuing his passion for music, not as a musician, singer or songwriter, but as a promoter of ‘unusual’ techno music events.
Whilst doing a music course at Midi Music in Deptford, Steve popped into the Albany Theatre and by chance saw a leaflet advertising business start-up training for budding entrepreneurs and so, in September 2004, his relationship with Head for Business began.
Steve remarked: “Joining the Head for Business training programme was the best thing for me at that time. Not only was the warmth of the team felt throughout the sessions but the training was practical and complete. Thanks to Head for Business I learnt a lot about setting up in business and I felt good about what I was doing.”
In 2005 ‘Tilted Disco’ his music company was born and he started running events.“Even though I was not making money and at times felt isolated and depressed, I never gave up”.
Today Tilted Disco has gone from strength to strength and is now looking to venture into Europe.
Steve, not intent on staying within one field, has now diversified his business into a new direct marketing venture called ‘Dice People’.
Both companies employ 4 people and up to another 15 freelancers from time to time.
When asked how he views his future, with a shy boyish grin Steve replied: “with optimism, pure optimism’’. |
